VISION

Foreign Language Academy German (FLAG) of Glendale Unified School District http://gusd.net will provide students with an education that prepares them to be responsible citizens of the world. They will be ready to accept the challenges and enjoy the benefits of the global marketplace. It will prepare them to take all required California exams, as well as high-level German exams. The focus will be culturally inclusive, multilingual, and non-biased with regard to the students' socio-economic or ethnic backgrounds.

Absolutely no previous knowledge of German required.

Each child will be appreciated for his/her individual learning progress and success in relation to challenging, but appropriate benchmarks. Students will be held to high intellectual and moral standards in a caring learning environment that encourages involvement, inquiry, and the quest for life-long learning.

Our teaching methods will be designed to instill a joy of learning and nurture curiosity, paired with self-discipline. We believe all students should be enabled to acquire healthy self-esteem and to gain a set of core values that will make them valuable and well-mannered members of their communities. Parents, supported by the school staff, faculty and community, will participate in their children's academic commitment and foster their developing sense of appreciation for and service to the community.

MISSION

Multilingualism

Multilingualism is the norm in the majority of the World. and we believe that children who speak, read, and write more than one language will be better prepared for life in the 21st century. The best way to master another language to near native fluency is to begin learning the second or other language at an early age. One effective way of acquiring this second or other language is through early enrollment in a foreign language immersion program. Students will also profit from the demonstrated advantages multilingual students receive from their bi-cultural and multilingual experiences.

Creativity

Facilitating and fostering creativity is seen not only as part of the arts program, but also as a means to promote academic and personal development. To quote Pablo Picasso, we believe "Everything you can imagine is real." Quoting Albert Einstein, we are convinced "Imagination is more important than knowledge." Therefore, the school will encourage application of creativity throughout the program.

Values and Citizenship

All students will be encouraged to use their creativity and skills of exploration and innovation to develop a core value system, a strong and reasonable work ethic, and leadership skills. By exposing to and immersing our students in a new culture, they will develop respect for the diversity of humankind, and we promote international awareness, and informed, active and responsible world citizenship. Teaching respect for the individual students will learn to be a part of a caring community of learning which will prepare them to be FLAG German will educates children to accept and meet their responsibilities. Respect for individuals and empathy will help to form balanced and self-confident individuals.

Healthy Lifestyle and the Environment

The school will instill awareness of health and the environment through daily routines, good nutrition, exercise, and hands-on projects to supply each student with knowledge and insights to encourage them to become enlightened stewards of their own body and the environment.

Community Involvement

At the heart of every successful school are involved parents, extended families and their communities, outstanding teachers, and board members who are committed to excellence and the individual needs of each child. The students will be encouraged to take an active part in service projects that will benefit the communities in which they study. The school will build strong relationships with the neighboring community through projects and guest speakers.
